Spain's Largest Port

The Port of Huelva is a strategic South Atlantic gateway, established as a core node port of the Trans-European Transport Network. Historically a major bulk-cargo hub for south-western Iberia, it handles more than 30 million tonnes a year. Its competitive edge lies in the wide availability of industrial land (it is Spain’s largest port, with more than 1,700 hectares in operation) and intermodal infrastructure directly connected by rail and motorway to the peninsular hinterland. It has more than 8.5 kilometres of berthing line and offers draughts of up to 15 metres, allowing the simultaneous operation of Panamax vessels and large tankers. It is equipped with automated terminals for the intensive loading and unloading of liquid bulk (crude oil, LNG and chemical products) and dry bulk (mining and agribulk) using large-tonnage cranes, mechanised conveyor belts and direct pipelines to the storage parks. The expansion of the Muelle Sur (South Quay) adds more than 1,500 metres of berthing line with Super Post-Panamax cranes dedicated to container handling and multiple ramps for roll-on/roll-off traffic. The port is currently accelerating its positioning as a hub for green hydrogen, ammonia derivatives and biofuels. With a strong investment plan in security, digitalisation, decarbonisation and efficiency, Huelva stands as an essential, secure platform for energy logistics and multimodal trade.

In 2017, the Port of Huelva had an outdated and incomplete enclosure. Securing the country’s largest port with next-generation fencing seemed unfeasible at first, but the Port Authority put forward a bold project that would allow the perimeter to be upgraded and monitored in phases, completing the enclosure within a few years and ensuring it would remain technologically current for decades.

The Solution: smart fence system for an extensive perimeter with multiple integrated access points

The DTAC PRO system was chosen for three key reasons:

01

Proven track record

DTAC’s extensive track record in critical infrastructure and, more specifically, in port facilities.

02

Industrial-grade protection

Its ability to provide industrial-grade anti-intrusion protection (anti-climb and anti-cut mesh, anti-vandal posts and an anti-lift base rail).

03

Integrated access points

Its wide range of integrated gates and doors, which made it possible to protect the many pedestrian, vehicle and rail access points with the same system.

False alarms

±5 km

Perimeter protected

15 m

Widest gate span

Monitored perimeter, zero false alarms, event location accurate to ±3 m and automatic camera positioning (every alarm points the camera covering the affected section towards the event, drastically reducing identification and response time). In addition, the many pedestrian, vehicle and rail access points along the perimeter were fully integrated into the system (hinged and sliding DTAC gates were installed, both manual and motorised, up to 15 metres wide), effectively unifying technology, appearance and maintenance.

After a decade in operation, the smart perimeter at the Port of Huelva is not only still in service, but the port authority has been periodically extending its coverage, demonstrating its full satisfaction with the results.
