Smart Fence at the Mediterranean's Leading Petrochemical Port Hub

The Port of Tarragona is one of the most advanced and competitive port logistics platforms in the western Mediterranean, positioned as a key strategic hub for international dry and liquid bulk traffic, especially petroleum and chemical products linked to its major petrochemical estate, agri-food goods and vehicles. The port has also recently established itself as a key point in Mediterranean tourist traffic, driven by a new cruise terminal and an outstanding security project. With more than 10 kilometres of berthing line and draughts of up to 20 metres, the port offers uninterrupted operations 365 days a year for large-tonnage vessels. Its infrastructure combines more than 400 hectares of land with an internal rail network connected quayside in both Iberian and international gauge, ensuring smooth intermodality with the Mediterranean Corridor and Europe. Operating under the highest efficiency and security standards (ISPS), the facility integrates automated terminals with continuous unloading capacities of more than 2,000 t/h and a robust, comprehensive security setup. This strength, combined with direct access to the main road networks, makes the port a high-performance piece of infrastructure, designed to optimise costs for the most demanding supply chains.

In 2012, the Port of Tarragona had a permeable enclosure, incompatible with its determination to grow and compete against nearby ports, and disconnected from proper port-city integration. An ambitious, comprehensive security project was designed, aiming to turn protection into a strategic pillar and a differentiating asset for the port, which would include, among other elements, next-generation smart fence systems.
